Treatment of Chronic Sinusitis

The disease that occurs due to the filling of the air cavities located inside the bones around the nose, called the sinuses, with inflamed tissue is called sinusitis. The congestion that occurs together with sinusitis manifests itself with a yellow-green runny nose, headache, difficulty breathing and nasal discharge.

The air cavities, called sinuses, are part of the nasal system that forms mucus by virtue of their normal function. About half a liter of mucus is secreted by the nose and sinuses per day, according to their normal functions. The mucus formed by the nasal system is responsible for eliminating these elements that threaten the health of the body by cleaning bacteria, dust particles and particles in the air inhaled through the breath. Then, the mucus fluid that is filtered into the throat and swallowed is destroyed by being broken down by stomach acid. This condition is a normal body function that is performed many times a day. The condition of sinusitis, on the other hand, is an inflammation of this mucous fluid that lines the sinuses.

In general, sinusitis occurs due to the inability of the mucus produced by the laying mucosa to be discharged into the nose. We can list the basic 3 factors that cause mucus to not be emptied into the nose as follows;

Changes in the content or consistency of mucus
Disruption of the system that allows the mucus contained in the sinuses to be actively transported to the ostium
The occurrence of blockage in the channels that allow the sinuses to empty into the nose
With the presence of one or more of these factors that cause mucus to be unable to be discharged into the nose, sinusitis disease occurs.

What is Chronic Sinusitis?

In people who have signs of sinusitis and receive medical treatment in this direction, but there is no improvement in their complaints after an average of 3 months, the diagnosis of chronic sinusitis is made as a result of the relevant tests performed.

In cases of chronic sinusitis, complaints and signs, i.e. symptoms of sinusitis, are manifested by infections that last longer than 12 weeks.

What Are the Symptoms of Chronic Sinusitis?

In cases of chronic sinusitis, where the symptoms of chronic sinusitis persist for more than 12 weeks, the symptoms may vary from person to person. The general opinion is that sinusitis causes headache or facial pain, but sinusitis manifests itself with complaints other than pain. We can list the main symptoms of sinusitis as follows;

  • Runny nose of yellow-green color and dark consistency

How is Chronic Sinusitis Treated?

Sinusitis is classified into 3 groups as acute, subacute and chronic sinusitis. Acute sinusitis lasts about 4 weeks, shows improvement with medication or spontaneously. Subacute sinusitis is the transitional stage in which acute sinusitis has not yet fully healed, while chronic sinusitis has not fully formed.

Chronic sinusitis, on the other hand, manifests itself with symptoms of sinusitis that persist despite the use of antibiotics. In cases of chronic sinusitis; changes are made in the person's lifestyle (smoking cessation, etc.), nasal sprays containing glucocorticoids, pills, medicines and antibiotics are used. In cases where chronic sinusitis cannot be treated with medication, surgery may be required.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

In endoscopic sinus surgery applications applied to chronic sinusitis patients, polyps or other anatomical disorders that cause blockage of the natural channels found in circumcisions are corrected, so that the sinus channels are opened.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is an application that should be performed carefully and carefully in terms of the risk of developing complications. It requires a long recovery period.

Balloon Synoplasty Surgery

Whether the patient is suitable for this method is determined in accordance with the examinations performed.

With the balloon synoplasty surgical method, the closed hole of the sinuses is determined first of all, and then the deflated balloon is placed in this hole. In the balloon synoplasty application performed with X-ray accompaniment, the balloon can be placed at the most accurate point. Then, the balloon is inflated by applying a certain pressure. Thus, the opening or expansion of the blocked sinus hole is ensured.

The patient who has undergone balloon synoplasty surgery can be discharged on the same day, can return to work the next day and it is ensured that the patient's natural anatomical structure is not disturbed.

Sinusitis treatment with balloon is applied to people who have sinusitis with meat growth, whose small sinuses are blocked and who are younger than 17 years old.
