Snoring Treatment

Snoring is the sound that occurs during breathing during sleep. When breathing during sleep, air passes through a narrow space with soft tissues around it. When the air taken in through breathing passes through a narrow space, the sound formed by the effect of the vibration of the surrounding soft tissues is called snoring.

With the increase in shortness of breath performed during sleep, there is also an aggravation in snoring. The condition that causes snoring, that is, shortness of breath during breathing, contrary to popular belief, is not caused by a pathology in the nose, but usually occurs when the upper respiratory tract narrows behind the tongue and in the area around the pharynx.

Snoring is divided into 2 groups as simple snoring and sleep apnea. Simple snoring is an audible breathing that occurs only during sleep. On the other hand, sleep apnea occurs with conditions such as respiratory arrest during sleep, a decrease in the level of oxygen saturation in the blood. Sleep apnea appears to us as a condition that poses serious life risks in itself and can cause death in sleep.

Snoring can be observed in 45% of adults from time to time, and in 25% continuously. Snoring, which should be evaluated as a harbinger of serious health problems, appears as a condition whose frequency increases with age.

Do I Need a Surgical Operation?

In the surgical treatment of snoring, first of all, a definitive diagnosis of whether it is simple snoring or sleep apnea should be made. The exact diagnosis of sleep apnea can be made with a sleep test called polysomnography.

We can list the interventions to be performed in the surgical treatment of simple snoring as follows;

  • Nasal compartment surgery
  • Surgical procedures of the lower nasal flesh (turbinate)
  • Nasal valve (internal angle of the nose) surgical procedures
  • Small tongue-soft palate surgeries
  • Nasal flesh and tonsil surgery performed especially in children

On the other hand, in snoring patients with suspected sleep apnea, it should be ensured that there are problems in the nasal region after a detailed examination and that the patient reaches the ideal weight at the same time. Then, the final diagnosis should be made with the palisomnography test and the necessary treatment practices should be determined. Pressurized oxygen masks are used during sleep in patients with severe sleep apnea, rather than surgical interventions. On the other hand, in patients with mild and moderate sleep apnea, soft palate and small tongue surgeries, tongue root surgeries and jaw advancement surgeries can be performed in accordance with the underlying pathology.
